Sunshine Coast Regional Council has approved a massive two-stage expansion to Kawana Shoppingworld, in the heart of Kawana Waters between Caloundra and Mooloolaba.

Stage One works will include an extra 750 car parks to the Sunshine Coast shopping centre on Port Cartwright Drive and a 6000 square metre, 10-screen cinema complex, along with extra restaurants and 5000 square metres of new stores.

The second stage of the Mirvac development will deliver extra shops, including an additional major retail tenant, plus more car parking.

Sunshine Coast planning and development committee chairman Cr Christian Dickson said the expansion had already created a “buzz” on the Sunshine Coast. It will create 200 new jobs in the expanded shopping centre.

“The jobs created by the construction will be a welcome boost to our building sector,” Cr Dickson said.

Local councillor John Connolly said the expansion would be well received on the Sunshine Coast.

“There’s no doubt this expansion is going to be very much welcomed by everyone in the area and I look forward to enjoying a trip to the movies when the cinema doors are open,” Cr Connolly said.

Mirvac’s Senior Development Manager, Retail, Robert Beck, said well-received recent renovations at Kawana Shoppingworld showed there was demand for future growth.

He said the expansion would cut travel times and generate even more demand for jobs.

The expansion work is likely to start before the end of the year.

It is unclear as yet which cinema chain will operate in the expanded shopping centre.

Mirvac lodged their development application in November 2015.
