Deon ready to step up

ON TRACK: Deon Kenzie said he is ticking all the boxes so far in his Rio preparations and will begin to focus on race-like training. Conditioninghas been the sole focus for Deon Kenziein the last few weeks but he is preparing to start stepping things up.

Three months out from the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games, the Forth para-athlete is busy getting his body in the perfect condition for the T381500m.Kenzie said his training was going well butin the coming weeks he would be pushing the tempo.

“Training is going really well and I’m on track with my times so at the moment it’s all going to plan,” Kenzie said.

“It’s a busy few months coming up and soon I’ll be hitting the track again to get race ready for Rio.”

Kenzie said lately his focus had been on longer distances to get his endurance and conditioning at the top of it’s game.

But he would be getting back into race mode soon.

“I haven’t been doing much racing because I’ve been focusing on conditioning type training and longer distances,” he said.

“So it’s been all aerobic based work and longer sessions.

“But soon I’ll be starting to get back out onto the track and into specific race type training.”

It is all systems go for the 20-year-old from now until the Paralympics with a training camp in Cairns as well as a competition on the Gold Coast to prepare for.

Looking ahead to Rio, the aimwas still to win a gold medal and Kenzie believes if he can reach his set goals he has a good chance.

IN ACTION: Deon Kenzie is focusing on longer distances before getting ready to speed it up ahead of Rio.

“I try not to focus too much on the result but rather the process,” he said.

“But I’m aiming to run about the four minute mark and if I can do that I’ll definitely be around the mark and a real chance.“

Kenzie said speed would be hisfocus from now until the gamesand he would head over to America to get ready for the Paralympics in August.

“I’ll hit the track and work on my speed and get into the rhythm of things,” he said.

“Prior to the games we head to Florida in August for a pre-stage camp with Athletics Australia and from there it’s on to Rio.”The2016 Rio Paralympic Gamesrun from September 7-18.
