Heroine helps to save man’s life

QUICK-THINKING: The actions of Tracy Sandow helped to save the life of a man who collapsed in Port Pirie’s Ellen Centre shopping precinct. Mrs Sandow performed resuscitation on the man.

A modest heroineled a team of people to save a man’s life inPort Pirie.

Port Pirie local andEllen Centre Newsagency owner Tracy Sandow was experiencing her usualTuesday morningbefore a man collapsed outside her shop about11am.

Mrs Sandow said she saw the incident unfold and launched into action.

“I saw people standing around and I had already called triple-zero … I told the operator that he was not breathing and had no pulse,” she said.

“She told me to get him on to his back and begin resuscitationstraight away.”

Mrs Sandow said that the operator talked her through about how to resuscitate the man.

“After a period of time he took a reflex breath and the operator said, ‘just keep going’,” she said.

A Good Samaritan joined the operation to save the man soon afterwards.

“Another woman came up and took over from me … I did not know her and she said she was here on holidayfrom Victoria,” Mrs Sandow said.“She did not give her name but I wish she did, I would like to thank her, too.”

Paramedics arrived quickly andtold Mrs Sandow that her work was vital in keeping the man alive.

ButMrs Sandow said that it was a team effort which led to the man being saved.

“I do not want any glory because it was a team effort … I could not have done it without the operator on the phone or the lady who came to help me,” she said.

The man was taken to Port Pirie Hospital by paramedicsand then flown to the Royal Adelaide Hospital for treatment.He is expected to have heart surgery.

Mrs Sandow has hadregular updates and messages of gratitudefrom the man’s familywho have said they will return to thank her in person.

Shesaid she does not feel like a heroine and thatthe action she took was “just the right thing to do.”

“Knowing that he survived has made me feel great,” she said.Her actions show the strong sense of community in Port Pirie and serve as an inspiration to others.
