Masses taste Italian wines fit for a king

TOP DROP: Enjoy new release vintages at Sam Miranda cellar door during Weekend Fit for a King this weekend. Eleven wineries participate in the annual celebration.THE annual celebration of Italian food and wine styles will attract thousands of visitors to the King Valley.

Festival-goers can taste, explore and feast like a king during Weekend Fit for a King on Saturday and Sunday.

The King Valley’swinemaking families willopen newrelease wines for visitors to tasteincluding the Italian varietals for which they areknown such asprosecco, pinot grigio, sangiovese and nebbiolo.

Thewinemakers will guide visitors through what makes theregion unique at their cellar doors.

Participating wineries include Brown Brothers, Chrismont, Dal Zotto, Darling Estate,Francesco, La Cantina, Merkel, Pizzini,Politini, Sam Miranda and Symphonia.

Special events in the festival program this year include a masterclass with the winemakerJoel Pizzini.

Participants will learn aboutItalian wine varieties, taste current and back vintage winesand discover theeffects of vineyard, vintage, varietal and winemaking techniques in wine’sdevelopment over the years.

Chrismont Wines will offerauthentic, refined Italian cuisine to match their elegant winesatitsnew cellar door at Cheshunt.

Chrismont’s unparalleledviews of the King Valley have been captured by building designer MG Designs’ use of a floating deck over the vineyard and floor-to-ceiling glass panels.

Stonemason Frank Vickers built the entrance wall and free-standing fireplace with stone from Glenrowan.

Meals areserved on Sarah Schembriceramics made with clay from the winery property.

Moyhu Hotel, which serves as a cellar door for Merkel Wines, will offer live music onSaturday and Sunday from 7pm.

Myrrhee winemaker Glen Merkel, together with his wife Melissa Wilson and sister Jillian Merkel, bought the historic Moyhu Hotel in late 2015.Thecommunity watering hole offersa paddock-to-plate menu.

A lavish dinner –The King’s Feast –will be heldon the opening night of the festival in Brown Brothers’ historic barn at Milawa.

Four courses will be matched with wine from the family cellar withlive entertainment.
