DEVASTATED Hockeyroo Kellie White has vowed to continue her career despite rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in her knee for a third time, shattering her Olympic Games dream on the eve of Rio.

White revealed on Wednesday night that her Olympic hopes were over after another knee injury added to a cruel injury toll that had already forced her to miss the London Games four years ago. White injured her knee in the Hockeyroos’ series against New Zealand in Darwin.

The Commonwealth Games gold medalist missed almost two years after knee injuries robbed her of her chance of Olympic glory in London and the same nightmare has struck again.

But in a sign of grit, character and determination, White said she would fight to recover even if it meant just one more game for Australia.

“Unfortunately it was confirmed yesterday that I have re-torn my left ACL during our final against New Zealand in Darwin over the weekend,” White posted on social media.

“Another character building moment awaiting me – I will smile at all those precious moments of gold medals, grand finals, 1v1 sudden death moments, the goals scored, the debut moments and the friendships made and be grateful I also have learnt from and rose above all the hard times with 3 ACL reconstructions now, grand final losses, non selection and doubt and fear I’ll never be good enough again and reflect on these moments to spur me on for the next 12 months to have just one more moment in the green and gold bodysuit.

“I would never change for a second what I do for a living I love my sport and being apart of such an amazing and inspiring team. Thanks to all those who have sent flowers, cards, love and support. This road will be much easier because of you all!”

White’s mum Julie, who was at the game when her daughter tore her left ACL in the final against Japan.

“It was a dream shattering moment and Kellie is devastated, but coping pretty well.

It is like London all over again,” Mrs White said.

“She is back in Perth now and has seen the doctors and will be operated on tomorrow (today).

“Kellie has plenty of support over there, her brother and Josh Miller plus the very tight hockey community will all be supporting her.

“Once the operation is completed she will have a long road of rehabilitation which will also be undertaken in Perth.

“We don’t expect her to be home in Crookwell for quite some time.”

Yesterday White was still quite positive about her future, when she spoke to the Goulburn Post about her injury and her hockey career.

“I was quite lucky, my mum, dad, brother and my fiance were all their watching, when I collided with another player and knocked my knee,” she said.

“I knew pretty well straight away what had happened , having been through it three times before.

“Everyone was there for me when I was going through the pain and tears of realising that I would be not going to Rio and facing 12 months of rehabilitation.

“ I am focussing on the positives.

“There are not too many people who have achieved a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games and silver in the World Cup I have made lots of friends and done so much that I wouldn’t have achieved, if it were not for hockey.

“I am still hoping to wear the green and gold again, but I am sure other pathways will open to me.

“ I have been involved with coaching and that may also be a prospect in the future but I have to concentrate on getting right. I am thankful for all the support I am receiving including from the worldwide hockey community, helping me to stay positive.”
