School leavers don’t need more pressure

LAST weekThe Irrigator’s”sister newspaper”The Area Newsran an article discussing how some parents push their children in to a university education.

After reading through this story, it is obvious that many students feel pressured by their families to pursue a higher education even if that’s not what they want to do with their lives.

In this day and age there are so many choices for those leaving school.

Higher education is just one of those.

There are all kinds of apprenticeships and traineeships that young people can take up in a field that suits them.

From memory, university education was always pushed as something “you had to do” by career advisers at schools.

That was something I chose to do, but I knew I wanted a career in journalism.

For those not wanting to go on to higher education, I’m sure they at some point might feel as though choosing the different option makes them some sort of failure.

That is certainly not the case.

While attending university is certainly more than worthwhile, so is getting out in to the work force straight away and kick starting a career while training on the job.

It is well known that there is a significant skills shortage across the country as well.

Going into a trade, working in hospitality and retail are all respectable jobs and ones that are needed to keep the country’s economy ticking over.

Not to mention, if young people are staying to work in places like Leeton, the benefits are 10-fold.

It’s so important the conversation with students continues to shift and change.

Schools are already doing this, which is a move in the right direction.

What needs to happen is for the stigma attached to choosing a job over a university degree straight out of school is removed. The same goes for those students that decide to stay and live in their home town.

This is no way makes them any sort of “failure” and they shouldn’t be viewed in this light by their peers of family. At the end of the day what a person does with their own life is their choice and their decision.

If it makes them happy, then what right does anyone have to judge?

There are so many different ways we can all leave our mark on the world, so if that’s through earning a university degree or taking up a spot in the work force –it all counts and one isn’t better than the other.
