It is another example of the growing strength of the campaign, which has recently seen Nan Tien Temple’s Reverend MiaoYou and South Coast Labour Council secretary Arthur Rorris join as patrons for the Unanderra Access Group (UAG).

The group has been fighting for improved access to the station platform, which at present can only be accessed by two sets of stairs.

On Friday the Maritime Workers Union, the Australian Workers Union, the Rail Tram and Bus Union, the CFMEU andthe National Tertiary Education Union joined the campaign.

“The friendsthat we have here from the union movementare not just here to supporta good cause,” Mr Rorris said.

“They’re here to support the miners, the steelworkers, the maritime workers, the university workerswho are allpart of this community.

“Many of their members actually live in this region and live in this vicinity. They are here because they do need access. Many of their membersneed these lifts to happen.”

Bec Schmidt from the UAG said it was important to keep widening the campaign.

“They [the government]keep sayingit’s a community-based thingbut we’ve now got businessesand union organisations onboardto show that it’s not justus individualswho are asking for it,” she said.

The next move for the campaign is a pre-budget rally at the train station to be held on the followingSaturday at 11am.
