Firefighters had to retreat from a burning Catalina home overnight, fearing the second storey and roof would collapse on them.

Police investigations continue intothe fire which took three crewstwo hours to extinguish overnight in Ridge St, Catalina.

Batemans Bay Fire and Rescue crews said they responded shortly after 4am and found a two-storey home fully alight.

“Crews quickly deployed lines of hoses to tackle the fire,” a firefighter said.

“Once power was isolated, firefighters from both Batemans Bay and Moruya 384 stations gained entry and started to knock down the fire from the inside, while the RFS from Batemans Bay tackled the blaze from the outside.

“Crews inside eventually had to retreat for safety reasons as the roof and the second story floor were in danger of collapse.

“The fire was eventually extinguished after approximately two hours.

“Fortunately the house was unoccupied at the time. Police will be investigating the cause of the fire and crews will be on standby for any flare ups.”

7.34AM:Ahouse in, Catalinawas damaged by fire overnight.

Firefighters from Batemans Bay and Moruya arrived to find the two-storey Ridge Street house well alight.

The fire took two hours to extinguish.

No body was injured in the fire. It is understood the property is a holiday house andthe occupants were to arrive for the long weekend.

Batemans Bay police are investigating the cause of the fire.
